Creating sustainable value with Autonomous Driving – Evolution versus Revolution

Autonomous Driving is at a crucial turning point. The euphoria towards commercializing fully self-driving vehicles has quickly diminished for the near-term future: With technological and regulatory hurdles as well a lack of public trust in current applications, timelines for true Level 5 autonomous vehicles have been pushed back, and market players are wondering if their business cases will ever materialize. Without a clear outlook how autonomous driving can resolve or could even worsen traffic congestion and vehicle emission problems in our cities, the fundamental question has clearly shifted from “How fast can we do it?” to “How can we get there or should we do it all?”. Therefore, now is the time to identify new approaches and define an evolutionary pathway towards an entirely new and sustainable mobility system of the future.
